There will be many bookshop parties tomorrow as well as the chance to pick up the Books are My Bag tote bags. Tracey Emin has designed a collector’s edition bag which will be available from tomorrow (11th October,) but be quick if you want to get your hands on one. Jen Campbell’s, The Bookshop Book is the official book for this year’s campaign and it looks fantastic.
Throughout October, Books are My Bag are also running #ThisBookshop. Just tweet what your favourite bookshop is or if you have your own blog, write a blog post and share on Twitter with that hashtag, #ThisBookshop. The idea is to put bookshops in the spotlight and at the end of October they will award somebody using that hashtag with some book tokens.
BOOKS ARE MY BAG, which originally launched in 2013, is a nationwide campaign to celebrate bookshops and to promote them. I buy online sometimes. I think we all do but there is nothing quite like walking into a bookshop and loosing yourself for a while as you browse for that perfect book and to see all those shelves containing all those undiscovered stories which transport you to far away places and where you meet characters that can become as real to you as any friend. It may be a strange thing to say but for me, it’s true. That is why campaigns like Books Are My Bag are so important.
For me, bookshops can never be replaced. My favourites are my local Waterstones in Southampton (loads of choice and lovely staff.) However, I do always make an effort to go to Foyles in London whenever I can. I LOVE the store on Charing Cross Road down to the great choice of books, the atmosphere and the cafe is just fantastic (books and tea for me is just a perfect combination.) I also am planning on visiting Hatchards too on my next visit. You know what, just give me an afternoon touring bookshops and I’ll be happy.
Books are my Bag can found on Twitter at @booksaremybag. For a list of participating bookshops and to find out about Books are my Bag events going on nationwide, click here to go to the Books are My Bag website.
