Blog Tour: Relativity by Antonia Hayes – Review

RelativityI’d like to welcome Antonia Hayes to Novel Kicks today and the blog tour for her debut novel, Relativity.

Ethan is an exceptionally gifted young boy, obsessed with physics and astronomy.

His single mother Claire is fiercely protective of her brilliant, vulnerable son. But she can’t shield him forever from learning the truth about what happened to him when he was a baby; why Mark had to leave them all those years ago.

Now age twelve, Ethan is increasingly curious about his past, especially his father’s absence in his life. When he intercepts a letter to Claire from Mark, he opens a lifetime of feelings that, like gravity, will pull the three together again.

My verdict on Relativity:

First of all, I have to say how much I adored the cover for this novel. It is so beautiful and whimsical – it totally suits the story.

This book is told from three different perspectives which I liked as you got to understand the motivations behind each character. It’s told from the perspective of twelve-year-old Ethan, his mother, Claire and Mark (Ethan’s father who’s been absent from his son’s life since Ethan was a baby.) Ethan’s current situation is tied in with why Mark had to leave.

You know when you read the blurb for a novel and know you are going to like it? That is what happened between me and this book. From the moment I picked this book up, I couldn’t stop reading, to the point where I lost out on sleep because of it. I just kept saying ‘one more page.’

Ethan is such an endearing character. He sees the world in such a unique way. I’d like to see it this way. Where anything is possible and there is beauty in everything.

relativity_blogtour_twitpic_fridayClaire is a flawed character and has shut herself off to many things. However, she is a good mother to Ethan. All she wants is to protect him.

I did worry I was going to get confused over all the science but it is intertwined with the story so well, it didn’t worry me at all. It was fine.

This book is a wonderful, beautiful story. It would suit fans of Anna McPartlin. A lovely writing style. A great debut novel. Hurry up with your next book, Antonia. I want to read it.

I'm Laura. I started Novel Kicks back in 2009 as I wanted a place to discuss books and writing - two loves of my life. As someone who has anxiety, these two things give me, and I am sure countless others, a much needed escape.
There is a monthly book club, writing exercises, prompts, reviews, author interviews, competitions and guest posts. I cover many genres and I hope there is something for everyone.
I grew up by the sea in Dorset and currently live in Poole with my husband, Chris and three cats. I love writing and have a BA (Hons) in Creative Writing from Falmouth University. I am writing my first book. If only I could stop pressing delete. Chris has threatened to stop it from working. Haha.
I have always loved creative writing since I was in first school and would very much like to meet my teacher, Miss Sayers, to say thank you for all the encouragement she gave me then.
When not writing, I love reading, cats, Disney, singing (I can't sing but this doesn't stop me,) and falling into a good TV show or film. If I could step into any fictional world, it would be amongst the characters in ABC's Once Upon a Time.
I love reading many genres and discovering new authors.
