I'm Laura. I started Novel Kicks back in 2009 as I wanted a place to discuss books and writing - two loves of my life. As someone who has anxiety, these two things give me, and I am sure countless others, a much needed escape.
There is a monthly book club, writing exercises, prompts, reviews, author interviews, competitions and guest posts. I cover many genres and I hope there is something for everyone.
I grew up by the sea in Dorset and currently live in Poole with my husband, Chris and three cats. I love writing and have a BA (Hons) in Creative Writing from Falmouth University. I am writing my first book. If only I could stop pressing delete. Chris has threatened to stop it from working. Haha.
I have always loved creative writing since I was in first school and would very much like to meet my teacher, Miss Sayers, to say thank you for all the encouragement she gave me then.
When not writing, I love reading, cats, Disney, singing (I can't sing but this doesn't stop me,) and falling into a good TV show or film. If I could step into any fictional world, it would be amongst the characters in ABC's Once Upon a Time.
I love reading many genres and discovering new authors.

For 2 years I have had “subscribe to Mslexia Magazine” on my to-do list. My to-do list is VERY long. For every item I cross off … I add many more. I rarely cross off items because, well, I am busy writing (aka mucking about with words) and even busier performing those words.
If I had a subscription it would be like time travelling to where I could get excited about reading it, being inspired, contributing, then, when fully digested, telling others about it.
If I had a free years subscription to Mslexia Magazine I would use the time saved to write a masterpiece. But then again … it would only be a haiku. Cos if I took my to-do lists seriously, subscribing would be much quicker than writing this response. Maybe that’s why my to-do list keeps growing? Will I learn? Or will I carry on writing when I should be being sensible?

  • I would like to win a subscription because my current one won’t last forever and I’m a poor, struggling writer, who can’t afford luxuries such as magazine subscriptions (and Mslexia is the best writing magazine on the market..!)

  • Hazel says:

Picked up Mslexia magazine when I was in London last week; lovingly caressed it and then replaced on the shelf as it is no longer in my budget. All those writing ideas and dreams – Miss Mslexia!

  • Kate Kemp says:

I’m already a writer (of the corporate copywriting kind) but I’ve always believed I have a novel in me. I hope this will be the year I turn my hand to fiction writing and it would be great to have some inspiration and guidance to help me make the leap! X

The last thing I won was a cake when I was 12, it was nice to eat but otherwise pretty useless. I am now 42, If I win this subscription I will have a year of movivation that just might encourage me to finish my book. If I do I’ll be sending NovelKicks pretty cakes to celebrate.

I’d like to win the subscription so that I can regain the joy of reading poetry again – to welcome it back into my life, which is full of obligatory reading.

  • Emily says:

I get up. The cat doesn’t answer when I call. The laptop whirs to life. I write, the keyboard speaks to me with a tap tap tap. I say hello to the postman. I write some more. I teach online. I write some more. I have dinner with my partner. Jon Snow presents the news. I chat with my partner but his voice is a little too deep, the timbre not quite right. I miss women’s voices.

  • Melinda says:

Writing is such a solitary pursuit, that Mslexia offers one of the few ways to feel part of an inspired community of writers, at all stages of their careers.

  • Amanda Murphy says:

I am in the process of deciding whether to make the leap of faith by abandoning my day job to focus on my writing career. This would help tip the balance!

  • Rhi says:

I’m living benefit to benefit at the moment, as my health is bad, and one of my cuts was mslexia. I write all I can and love the magazine. It’ll be a while until I can afford it again but I miss the connection to the professional writing world it gave me. I’m pretty isolated here.

  • Jane Dey says:

I came across Mslexia through the recommendation of a friend. The magazine fills your heart and mind, both with the valuable writing inspiration you can pick up from others and through the way it kick-starts the fertile blossom and flow of all your own writing ideas.

  • Sam says:

Behind every great writer is….a crippling addiction to reading. Mslexia is one of (very) few publications that makes me feel slightly less guilty about being a literature junkie. A year long hit!

  • Shelley White says:

It’s a fantastic mag for any writer, male or female! I used to subscribe when I was working but since I retired my income has substantialy decreased. It would be lovely to get it regularly again.

  • I’d love to win this. I’ve read issues in the past and spookily met a lady at the London Book Fair who’d written for it and when chatting to her thought, I really should hunt down a copy of it again and lo and behold this competition appears! Surely it’s fate, if I cross my fingers hard enough?? xx

  • Maureen Jeffs says:

I’ve subscribed since the very first issue but, during that period, my income has shrunk. Nearly every month I wonder whether or not to cancel; but I stick with it. I love the writing, usually, and aspire to emulate some of the best. What a boost a year’s free subscription would be.
