Book Review: Hit For Six by Isabella May

I’m pleased to be welcoming Isabella May to Novel Kicks and the blog tour for her latest book, Hit For Six.

A simmering Fangirl Down X Rivals X Crazy Rich Asians (with a British twist)

LOLA is juggling two jobs to make ends meet; underpaid sales exec by day, and waitress in a cocktail bar by night.

MONTY is the captain of Bath Beasts cricket team and heir to a portfolio of luxury properties.

Girls like her don’t normally end up with boys like him. But when she accidentally bares all at his cup final, destiny (and the number six) ensures their match is a home run.

Unfortunately, Monty’s family has other ideas, doing all they can to prevent their golden boy from getting bowled over by the lowly Lola. Can their love survive the attacking shot? Or will they find themselves on a sticky wicket?

*****

Lola works two jobs trying to make ends meet. Monty is on the verge of becoming a professional cricket player. However, he’s the heir to his family’s vast wealth. Will Lola and Monty find love or will people get in their way?

Having been a fan of some of Isabella May’s previous novels, I was eager to get started on Hit For Six. From the blurb, it looked like a fun read and it absolutely was.

Lola is someone a lot of people will see themselves in. She’s strong, feisty and with the amount of sexism around her, she stands up for herself – such an important trait for her to have. I adored the obsession with musical theatre and its renewed my want to go and see Six the Musical.

Monty felt like an upright man who, like Lola, has flaws, wants and needs. He reminded me of Logan from Gilmore Girls in terms of the amount of expectation put on him and Daniel from Ugly Betty when it comes to not knowing a lot about the fashion he’s supposed to be marketing. Haha.

The other characters were a mixed bunch in terms of likability. There’s a strong antagonist in Julian. There’s a couple of other characters I wanted to have a word with too but I don’t want to say anything more on that. I don’t want to spoil it. I do however want to adopt Squiffy.

The story was easy to get into, unfolded well and at a good pace. There were some moments where I laughed, shouted at the book, smiled and cheered. Isabella May is very good at building realistic settings and pulling you into her stories. I didn’t want to say goodbye to Lola and Monty.

Hit For Six is an enjoyable, funny, rollercoaster of a rom com that would be perfect for that summer holiday, relaxing afternoon in the garden, or an escape in your armchair. I loved it.

About Isabella May –

Isabella May lives in (mostly) sunny Andalusia, Spain with her husband, daughter and son, creatively inspired by the mountains and the sea. She grew up in Somerset on Glastonbury’s ley lines and loves to feature her quirky English hometown in her stories.

After a degree in Modern Languages and European Studies at UWE, Bristol (and a year working abroad in Bordeaux and Stuttgart), Isabella bagged an extremely jammy and fascinating job in children’s publishing… selling foreign rights for novelty, board, pop-up and non-fiction books all over the world; in every language from Icelandic to Korean, Bahasa Indonesian to Papiamento!

All of which has fuelled her curiosity and love of international food and travel – both feature extensively in her romcoms.

Isabella is also a Level 4 Pranic Healer and a stillbirth mum.

You can follow her Foodie Romance Journeys and Cricket Romances at the following hang-outs: her website, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Bluesky, and Threads

I’m Laura. I started Novel Kicks in 2009. I wanted a place to post my writing as well as give other writers like me the opportunity to do the same. There is also a monthly book club, a writing room which features writing prompts, book reviews, competitions, author interviews and guest posts.

I grew up by the sea (my favourite place in the world) and I currently live in Hampshire. I am married to Chris, have a cat named Buddy and I would love to be a writer. I’m trying to write the novel I’ve talked so much about writing if only I could stop pressing delete. I’ve loved writing since creative writing classes in primary school. I have always wanted to see my teacher Miss Sayers again and thank her for the encouragement. When not trying to write the novel or writing snippets of stories on anything I can get my hands on, I love reading, dancing like a loon and singing to myself very badly. My current obsession is Once Upon a Time and I would be happy to live with magic in the enchanted forest surrounded by all those wonderful stories provided that world also included Harry Potter. I love reading chick lit. contemporary fiction and novels with mystery.
