Which three things would your character like to try?

Fiction Friday: 28th february 2014.

List three activities that you could have your character doing. It could be anything from sky diving to a road trip from one end of the country to the other. Once you have your three things, pick one. If you are working on something at the moment, use your main character and write from the point of view of your character whilst they try this activity. If you’ve not got a character, open the book nearest to you and pick a name from there.

Write for a minimum of five minutes and then keep going. Once you’re done, don’t edit. Just post.

I’m Laura. I started Novel Kicks in 2009. I wanted a place to post my writing as well as give other writers like me the opportunity to do the same. There is also a monthly book club, a writing room which features writing prompts, book reviews, competitions, author interviews and guest posts.

I grew up by the sea (my favourite place in the world) and I currently live in Hampshire. I am married to Chris, have a cat named Buddy and I would love to be a writer. I’m trying to write the novel I’ve talked so much about writing if only I could stop pressing delete. I’ve loved writing since creative writing classes in primary school. I have always wanted to see my teacher Miss Sayers again and thank her for the encouragement. When not trying to write the novel or writing snippets of stories on anything I can get my hands on, I love reading, dancing like a loon and singing to myself very badly. My current obsession is Once Upon a Time and I would be happy to live with magic in the enchanted forest surrounded by all those wonderful stories provided that world also included Harry Potter. I love reading chick lit. contemporary fiction and novels with mystery.

I can’t believe I’ve not taken part in this before now!

Here goes. Character is Lizzie from my WIP The Man of My Dreams. My mind can’t think of anything she’d like to try now, so I’m going to go for something really boring – she wants to try a restaurant in London – The Breakfast Club.

I’m meeting the girls there, and so excited, but now, because of the meeting running over, I’m going to be late. I look at my watch, it’s already 18.40, and we were supposed to meet at 18.30. Hopefully they won’t kill me, but it’s the third time we’ve met up in a row that I’ve been late.

Work is starting to get to me. I guess everything is at the moment with everything going on at home. Nathan still hasn’t found a job, so always seems to be on edge. I feel like I’m walking on egg shells every time I’m in the same room as him. I’ so glad to be going out tonight – even if it means we’ll probably have an argument about me spending money unnecessarily. Well sod him, I have to have a life too.

It’s another 5 minutes before I get here. The place is noisy and heaving – it’s obviously a Friday night in Shoreditch. There’s no one at the door, so I walk straight through, looking to find Em and Sal myself. I walk the perimeter of the restaurant one and a half times, before I see them at a booth by the window. Booth if I can call it that, the chairs are benches, and the tables are little more than picnic benches. I kiss the girls and they pour me a glass of wine. As I take my coat off, I look round at the restaurant, when I walked it, I was too busy looking for Em and Sal to see the restaurant. It’s quirky – very Shoreditch. There’s plants everywhere, a bike, tiny tables with uncomfortable looking chairs, and posters and pictures everywhere. I like it. I just hope the food is good, I’m starving!

And back to Helen. This is the first thing I’ve written for AGES. Like months, seriously. If I think about it too much, I’ll get too scared to post it, so I’m not going to read it back, I’m just going to post it… Eek!
