Book Review: The Forever Night Stand by Bena Roberts

Paperback-forevernightstand

Happy Bank Holiday everyone. A big hello to Bena Roberts and the blog tour for her novella, The Forever Night Stand.

Sara has her back up against the wall. She is recovering from the side effects of chemotherapy and at her own “cancer free” party, she makes a decision that will change her life forever.

The adventure begins when she leaves her posh lifestyle in Scotland and moves in with her Bollywood loving parents, in West London. Her parents are tragically ashamed of Sara’s actions and her electronic monitor. She decides to make them happy again and considers re-marrying.

Enter Raj, a possible hero who comes with the promise of a huge Indian wedding in Goa!

George, the childhood love of her life who seems to be hanging around every corner. Or should she just go back to her husband? Sara faces the biggest dilemma of her life, after making the colossal mistake of her life. What will she do and whom will she choose?

My verdict:

The Forever Night Stand is told from the point of view of Sara and George.

Sara has found herself back at her parents house after an episode where, in a rage, she stabbed her husband’s lover at her cancer free celebration. She is now having to wear an electronic tag needing to put her life back together again and with no idea how.

George was Sara’s childhood boyfriend and Sara’s return has got him realising how much he still loves her and how much he let her down. Can he win her back?
Matters are not helped when a family friend, Raj, decides that Sara is the woman for him.

The Forever Night Stand Full BannerThis book is strange but in a totally good way. Sara is a very interesting and complex character with realistic flaws and many layers. Her life changes in a matter of moments. This novella is about dealing with the unexpected, perceptions about how others see you and how you see yourself and the people who are really going to be there for you when needed.

The narrative does jump around a little and there were a couple of times where I wasn’t sure what was going on. It’s erratic and this totally fits with the main character – it shows an insight into her psyche. This style of writing fits this character perfectly and it’s relatable to read about someone who hasn’t got it all together. Having beat cancer with chemo and then suffering from rage disorder, Sara is really facing rock bottom at the beginning of the story and it was interesting to see how she coped with everything going on.

I really loved George. He was a lovely character.

The Forever Night Stand is a quirky, humorous, quick read. If you’re looking for something unique then this is perfect. Serious moments mixed in with humour. I personally loved it.

Bena’s favorite literary style is black humor, and she hopes to offer a unique voice in this area. Her books aim to confront the darkest of life experiences, with levity. Most of her writing is heavy hitting yet also entertaining.

I'm Laura. I started Novel Kicks back in 2009 as I wanted a place to discuss books and writing - two loves of my life. As someone who has anxiety, these two things give me, and I am sure countless others, a much needed escape.
There is a monthly book club, writing exercises, prompts, reviews, author interviews, competitions and guest posts. I cover many genres and I hope there is something for everyone.
I grew up by the sea in Dorset and currently live in Poole with my husband, Chris and three cats. I love writing and have a BA (Hons) in Creative Writing from Falmouth University. I am writing my first book. If only I could stop pressing delete. Chris has threatened to stop it from working. Haha.
I have always loved creative writing since I was in first school and would very much like to meet my teacher, Miss Sayers, to say thank you for all the encouragement she gave me then.
When not writing, I love reading, cats, Disney, singing (I can't sing but this doesn't stop me,) and falling into a good TV show or film. If I could step into any fictional world, it would be amongst the characters in ABC's Once Upon a Time.
I love reading many genres and discovering new authors.
