Book Extract: Bad Moon Rising By Berni Stevens

A big massive hello to Berni Stevens. She’s here with the blog tour for her book, Bad Moon Rising.

Rock and roll relationships are complicated. They’re even worse when one of you is a werewolf.
Stevie Vane, nightclub manager of Dusk, prefers London’s nightlife to life in the pack — fewer claws, fewer challengers, far less bloodshed.

But when tragedy strikes, Stevie is forced back into a world where dominance of the pack is won by strength… and every weakness is punished. Some new members begin a brutal contest for control, and they soon discover his greatest weakness is Kat Matthews.

Kat’s band has just landed the best gig of their career at Dusk. And the instant chemistry between her and the charismatic manager is undeniable — but so are the secrets he’s keeping. Secrets that come with sharp teeth.

As the rival wolves close in and old grudges resurface, Stevie realises it isn’t just his pack at risk. It’s the woman he loves.

Witty, romantic, and gripping, Bad Moon Rising is the third book in The Immortals of London series– where feelings run wild and loyalty can cost you everything.

Berni has shared an extract with us today. We hope you enjoy it.

Stevie drops Kat home after their first date …

I released the seat belt and turned to face him. ‘It’s been great. Thanks, Stevie,’ I said.

He leaned forward to tuck a strand of hair behind my ear. ‘It’s been more than a pleasure.’ He gently tilted my chin upwards and kissed me softly on the lips. My stomach did a strange kind of flip at his kiss and I looked into his eyes as he drew back.

‘When are you free again?’

‘Not until Monday. Are you working?’

He nodded. ‘Want to come and sit at my bar?’

‘Sure.’

‘I’ll pick you up at seven and we’ll grab something to eat on the way.’

‘See, there you go again – feeding me. I’ll never be able to resist you now.’

‘That’s the plan.’ He leaned in and kissed me again. Another gentle kiss, but a kiss with an underlying promise of passion. He cradled my face with his hand and dropped one more feathery kiss on my forehead. ‘Go inside, little rock chick, before I change my mind and kidnap you.’

‘I’m going, but only because I might let you.’

He gave his now-familiar throaty chuckle and leaned across me to open my door.

Sliding out of the car, I leaned back in the open doorway. ‘Goodnight, Mr Bartender. See you Monday.’

‘Count on it. I hope the gigs go well.’

I closed the door and he drove off. The tail lights of his car held my attention until they turned the corner at the bottom of the road. I hadn’t felt like a besotted teenager since … well … since Josh, actually.

‘And look how that turned out,’ I muttered to myself.

Stevie glanced in his rear view mirror and saw Kat standing on the pavement where he’d left her, staring after the car. A strange warm feeling filled him. He never usually got this intense after a first date, but he had felt inexplicably drawn to Kat from the moment he’d set eyes on her. Something about her made him want to be with her all the time, but he knew only too well the difficulties that could arise with a serious relationship.

He turned the corner at the bottom of Kat’s road, and with a last glance in his mirror, saw to his satisfaction that she still stared after him. Perhaps she felt the same. How cool would that be?

Four days before he saw her again. It felt like an eternity. He laughed to himself. He’d have to ask Will whether it was normal to feel like this. Whatever normal was.

He flicked on the car’s B&O sound system, which immediately picked up the Bluetooth connection to his phone so the sound of Fleet Foxes filled the air. How he loved this car with its top-of-the-range gadgets. And music. Another great passion of his. Something else he and Kat had in common.

Kat. He knew her name wouldn’t be far from his thoughts until Monday.

A man’s figure detached itself from the shadows in a nearby doorway. He too stood still and stared after the tail lights of Stevie’s car, and after a while turned to look up at Kat’s windows as the lights went on. Taking a mobile phone from his pocket, he made a mental note of the number on the front gate, before taking a photo of the building. He slipped the phone back in his pocket and strolled up the road in the direction Stevie’s car had taken.

Things were looking up. The heir had a girlfriend. That made him vulnerable.

About Berni Stevens –

Berni Stevens lives in an ancient cottage in Hertfordshire, which sounds like it’s in the depths of the countryside, but really isn’t (because the green bits keep getting built on!)

Berni spent four years at art college in Sussex before starting her first job in publishing as a book cover and promotions designer and then solely as a book cover designer for many of the big London publishers. She’s now freelance, and designs for both publishers and many self-published authors. Although she still makes sure to leave time for her writing, and various hobbies. Berni was a finalist for the RNA Cover Designer of the Year Award both in 2021 and 2023.

Berni’s first full-length novel was a paranormal romance, called Fledgling, which was first published in the US in 2011, and retitled Dance Until Dawn, made its UK debut three years later, followed by the sequel, Revenge is Sweet and so beginning the Immortals of London series.
Veering away from the paranormal for a while, Berni’s first festive RomCom, One Magical Christmas, took some people by surprise – including herself. So much so, that she wrote three more!

With the re-appearance of the Romantasy genre … a new paranormal romance has finally broken free – Bad Moon Rising – the third book in the Immortals of London series.

Berni can be found on Facebook, X, Linkedin, Instagram and Threads … come and say hello!

Bad Moon Rising is book three in the Immortals of London series and was released in February 2026. Click to buy on Amazon UK and Amazon US.

I'm Laura. I started Novel Kicks back in 2009 as I wanted a place to discuss books and writing - two loves of my life. As someone who has anxiety, these two things give me, and I am sure countless others, a much needed escape.
There is a monthly book club, writing exercises, prompts, reviews, author interviews, competitions and guest posts. I cover many genres and I hope there is something for everyone.
I grew up by the sea in Dorset and currently live in Poole with my husband, Chris and three cats. I love writing and have a BA (Hons) in Creative Writing from Falmouth University. I am writing my first book. If only I could stop pressing delete. Chris has threatened to stop it from working. Haha.
I have always loved creative writing since I was in first school and would very much like to meet my teacher, Miss Sayers, to say thank you for all the encouragement she gave me then.
When not writing, I love reading, cats, Disney, singing (I can't sing but this doesn't stop me,) and falling into a good TV show or film. If I could step into any fictional world, it would be amongst the characters in ABC's Once Upon a Time.
I love reading many genres and discovering new authors.
