NK Chats To… Caroline James

Hi Caroline. Thank you so much for inviting Novel Kicks onto your blog tour!

Thank you so much for inviting me to join you and your wonderful followers on your lovely blog. I do hope that you all enjoy my new novel, The Arctic Cruise.

Can you tell us about The Arctic Cruise and what inspired it?

I’ve always dreamed of seeing the Northern Lights, so when the chance arose to take a winter cruise to Norway, it felt like the perfect opportunity—and irresistible research for a new story. The fjords were breathtaking, with snow-capped mountains rising above icy waters, and the atmosphere was completely magical. As we sailed beyond the Arctic Circle, the idea for The Arctic Cruise began to take shape: a story about two people drawn together aboard the ship, while the lives of other passengers subtly and unexpectedly intertwine with theirs, shaping a journey none of them will ever forget.

What were the best and most challenging parts of writing this novel?

The most rewarding part was exploring the emotional connection between Henry and Joy as their chemistry grew and obstacles intensified. Portraying those vulnerable moments—where attraction, doubt, and hope collide—was satisfying. The biggest challenge was ensuring those emotions resonate with readers and keep them invested in the characters and story, which demands honesty and careful crafting.

What’s your typical writing day like? Do you have any writing rituals?

I start each day with coffee, then answer correspondence and check social media before working on my novel. My target is 2,000 words a day; reaching that gives me a strong sense of accomplishment.

How do you approach the planning, writing, and editing processes?

I tackle planning, writing, and editing with discipline. I honour my publishing deadlines and treat writing as both a profession and a passion by refining my work to its best and marketing it effectively.

What comes first for you, plot or characters?

Plot comes first. I visualise and research the setting, then add characters to fit the story.

What kind of scene do you find the hardest to write?

Emotional scenes at a character’s most vulnerable moments are the hardest, requiring complete honesty and authenticity on the page. Achieving this is a challenge I strive to meet every time.

What are you currently working on?

My next novel is entitled The Nile Cruise. It promises a story with a cast of new characters – this time on a boat on the Nile.

Do you have any advice for overcoming writer’s block?

Instead of stepping away, face writer’s block head-on by writing anything that comes to mind, even if it feels disconnected from your project. The act of consistently putting words on the page, without overthinking, often helps overcome creative blocks and brings your writing back into flow.

Which three people (dead or alive) would you like to invite to a dinner party, and what do you think you’d talk about?

I’d start with the legendary chef Keith Floyd. My previous career was rooted in the hospitality industry, and during my time as a media agent, Floyd was held in the highest regard. Charismatic, immensely talented, and wildly entertaining, he would of course be in charge of cooking the meal and dinner would be unforgettable.

Next would be Shaboozey, the king of modern country rap. I could happily listen to him sing 24/7, and I’d love to talk with him about creativity, genre-blending, and what it takes to carve out a completely original sound in today’s music industry.

Finally, Agatha Christie—a woman with far more depth and intrigue than most people realise. I’ve followed in her footsteps in Egypt and have long adored her writing. Over dinner, I’m sure she would reveal fascinating insights and secrets behind her characters, her travels, and the extraordinary life experiences that shaped her stories. Her presence would ensure an evening of wit, mystery, and inspiration.

Would you rather –

Sing or dance to your favourite song for the rest of your life?

I will sing along with Shaboozy for as long as I can!

Have money or power?

Money please. It will give me the power to make other lives easier.

Would you rather have magical powers here on earth or live in a magical place without powers?

Magical powers on earth. The real magic is making a tangible difference to make changes that matter to those who need it.

Be able to have a one-minute conversation with your past self or future self?

My past self. To say that everything will be okay. When your back is against the wall, you find the strength to get through things—and that resilience is what shapes who you become.

Live in a world where it is constantly snowing or always raining?

Constantly snowing. I love cold weather climates.

Live in a world without music or movies?

I wouldn’t like to live without music; it is the pulse to my day and the heart of inspiration.

Take part in a dating show or a survival show?

I am very fortunate to have my perfect date, so I would jump at the chance to be on a survival show.

Thank you so much for hosting me and I wish you and your followers many happy reading hours.

I'm Laura. I started Novel Kicks back in 2009 as I wanted a place to discuss books and writing - two loves of my life. As someone who has anxiety, these two things give me, and I am sure countless others, a much needed escape.
There is a monthly book club, writing exercises, prompts, reviews, author interviews, competitions and guest posts. I cover many genres and I hope there is something for everyone.
I grew up by the sea in Dorset and currently live in Poole with my husband, Chris and three cats. I love writing and have a BA (Hons) in Creative Writing from Falmouth University. I am writing my first book. If only I could stop pressing delete. Chris has threatened to stop it from working. Haha.
I have always loved creative writing since I was in first school and would very much like to meet my teacher, Miss Sayers, to say thank you for all the encouragement she gave me then.
When not writing, I love reading, cats, Disney, singing (I can't sing but this doesn't stop me,) and falling into a good TV show or film. If I could step into any fictional world, it would be amongst the characters in ABC's Once Upon a Time.
I love reading many genres and discovering new authors.
