Book Review: The Accidental Debutante by Jane Dunn

It’s so exciting to be welcoming Jane Dunn back to Novel Kicks and the blog tour for her latest novel, The Accidental Debutante.

A daring young lady and dashing lord

At Prebbles Flying Circus, the daring Eliza Gray captivates audiences with her breathtaking feats on horseback. Yet beyond the applause, she harbours a longing to find the family she lost as a child and discover who she truly is.

Fate, however, takes an unexpected turn when Eliza is unceremoniously knocked down by a curricle driven recklessly by Raven, Earl Purfoy. Dazed but intrigued, she cannot help but notice Purfoy’s commanding presence.

For his part, the dashing lord, is mortified at his carelessness and resolves to assist the spirited yet intriguing young woman. He deposits her in the care of his dearest friends, Corinna and Alick Wolfe, who encourage Miss Gray in her search for her family and sponsor her entry into London society. The glittering balls and scurrilous gossip of the ton are a far cry from the circus ring and Eliza finds herself the subject of intense speculation and unwelcome advances.

As a most accidental debutante, Eliza has to navigate the complexities of high society and her new friendships. Her quest for family and belonging becomes perilously entwined with Zadoc Flynn, an American heir in search of an English bride, and the unfathomable Lord Purfoy.

Can Eliza uncover the truth of her past and the family she longs for? And will it be Mr Flynn or Lord Purfoy, or indeed her new female friends, who help her find her place in the world?

In a tale of courage, passion, and self-discovery, this lost orphan must decide where she truly belongs.

*****

Eliza knows little of her life before Prebbles Flying Circus. With little in terms of clues, she leaves the circus life behind to go in search of her long lost family. When she falls (literally) into the path of  Lord Raven Purfoy, things go in a direction that even Eliza couldn’t have imagined. Can Eliza find what’s she’s looking for?

I do love disappearing into a Regency setting and having enjoyed previous novels by this author, I couldn’t wait to get started on her latest book, The Accidental Debutante. The setting is described so vividly, I felt like I was walking through 1800’s London. Although I am not a fan of the expectations of men and women in this era, there is something so elegant about about it at the same time.

Eliza – oh, Eliza. I wanted to give you a hug. She feels much like a lost soul and as she searches for the place in which she belongs, I grew to love her more and more. I wanted a happy ending for this woman who is much stronger than she would give herself credit for.

Raven Purfoy is a man who gets in his own way but is, overall, a gentle man who is worried to open his heart. I felt such empathy for him as he lives through a cloud of grief.

The other supporting characters were also a great addition to the narrative. I ADORED Corinna and Alick – two kind people who expect nothing in return. If only there were more people like them in the world. Marina and Ferdy were also amongst my favourites. Zadoc Flynn is an example of a man who is totally in his own world. Haha. As for Lord Davenport – horrible man. Hahaha.

The plot moves at a steady pace as we are gradually told more about Eliza’s beginnings and what her future may look like. I quickly became invested in the lives of the people within. Could it be that we haven’t seen the last of these characters? Please… pretty please.

The Accidental Debutante is one of the best examples of a beautifully written regency novel full of surprises, realistic and relatable characters and is perfect if you’re looking for a big doze of romance.

I'm Laura. I started Novel Kicks back in 2009 as I wanted a place to discuss books and writing - two loves of my life. As someone who has anxiety, these two things give me, and I am sure countless others, a much needed escape.
There is a monthly book club, writing exercises, prompts, reviews, author interviews, competitions and guest posts. I cover many genres and I hope there is something for everyone.
I grew up by the sea in Dorset and currently live in Poole with my husband, Chris and three cats. I love writing and have a BA (Hons) in Creative Writing from Falmouth University. I am writing my first book. If only I could stop pressing delete. Chris has threatened to stop it from working. Haha.
I have always loved creative writing since I was in first school and would very much like to meet my teacher, Miss Sayers, to say thank you for all the encouragement she gave me then.
When not writing, I love reading, cats, Disney, singing (I can't sing but this doesn't stop me,) and falling into a good TV show or film. If I could step into any fictional world, it would be amongst the characters in ABC's Once Upon a Time.
I love reading many genres and discovering new authors.
